” The Brisbane City Council has installed an eye-catching new seat in a pretty spot on the Forest Lake foreshore — it’s bright red, so it’s hard to miss. It is one of 18 bright red seats installed across Brisbane in co-operation with the Red Rose Foundation, which is a national not-for-profit organisation working to end domestic violence-related deaths.

Foundation chief executive Betty Taylor said the red colour was chosen for the benches because of its obvious symbolism about violence and also because it was an engaging colour that made people think twice. We want people to stop and think and realise that 15-20 women are dying each year in Brisbane from domestic violence-related deaths,” Ms Taylor said.

The foundation is preparing for the launch of a new organisation to help women who have survived incidents of attempted strangulation.

“This form of domestic violence is common and leaves women with health issues,” Ms Taylor said.“
